Malnutrition in the elderly can result from chronic diseases, use of medicine, chewing and swallowing problems, loss of taste, physical disorders, inadequate dietary intake and some psychological and social factors. Studies about the effects of edentulism on nutrition indicate that there is direct proportion between malnutrition and edentulism. In some elderly patients, intake of some essential minerals and food may be insufficient. As a result of this, decrease in the amount of plasma concentrated thiamine, riboflavin or folic acid is observed, and this can lead to reduced tolerance of the tissues and poor adaptation of dentures (Table 1.1).
